The Buckeye Sounds Top Wedding Songs of 2017

So our list is a bit shorter this year than usual. We didn't seem to find as many big songs for wedding receptions this year.

We do have two songs by one artist - Bruno Mars.  I have to see him in concert sometime.

This year we put a lot more country songs on the list than we usually do - due to two really big country songs.

#1 - “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber

This groundbreaking Spanish-language pop song was an easy choice for #1 wedding song of 2017.  If you want your wedding reception to feel like a real party, start by playing this song. This was BY FAR the song of the year both commercially (16 weeks at #1) and professionally as it packed dance floors all summer long.  When I think back on 2017 it will be remembered as the year of “Despacito.”  Everything else was a distant second. Never in a million years did I think that I would have a Justin Bieber song at my #1 position.

#2 - “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars
This is the perfect song to play when you want your guests to rush the dance floor—everyone knows that hook. Its got a funk / disco feel to it that makes it a certainly a crowd-pleaser for guests of all ages. This is just a great dance tune that works well played alongside old or new tunes.  It’s not quite as catchy as Uptown Funk (few songs are) but it’s pretty close. Of all the new Bruno Mars songs, this one’s been our most consistent dance-floor-filler.

#3 - “This Is What You Came For” by Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna
A classic dance song with house music influence, this is a great song to end a reception - both in lyrics and in energy. It has the build up that has a great hook in it. Calvin Harris is known for his dance-worthy hits, and this tune is no exception. Oh yeah, this also works as a great entrance song!

#4 - “Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay
A match made in lounge heaven.  “Something Just Like This” lived up to its all star billing and became a really big song for me this year.  I usually used a remix to punch up the beat a bit and make it a little more danceable but either way, crowds always loved when I dropped this in and sang along to the catchy chorus.

#5 - “Body Like A Back Road” by Sam Hunt
It’s not often you can describe a country song as sexy but Hunt’s record breaking song (30+ weeks at #1 on the Country charts!) fits that bill and it’s one I played often this year. To say this was a big hit is understatement - this was one of the biggest country songs of all time. Sam Hunt wrote this song he got engaged. If you want to get DJ technical, its not a great dance song.  But its a GREAT sing-a-long song.  Simple and fun. (The music video is great too - its just a shot of a paved road for the entire song LOL)

#6 - “In Case You Didn’t Know” by Brett Young
If you’re a fan of country music, we predict that this will be the most-requested country first dance song of the year. I mean, with lyrics like “Even though I don’t tell you all the time/You had my heart a long, long time ago,” how could you go wrong?

#7 - “That's What I Like” by Bruno Mars
This song won a ton of awards - such as "Song Of The Year". Bruno Mars is so talented and is still being compared to great artists like Michael Jackson and Prince. This song rocks thanks to a killer vocal and tasteful trap drums.

#8 - “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran took a very high ranking in last year's survey with “Thinking Out Loud” (which is still one of the top dance songs of the moment). “Shape of You” is the new favorite. It’s not a great dance song per se. Its also not a great slow dance song. We usually find ourselves playing it towards the end of dinner. So while it was one of the biggest hit songs of 2017, it doesn't score super high on our end-of-year-list.  I hope Ed doesn't mind this slight too much.
